Keynote Address: “Sustaining the Shepherd: The Essential Role of Self-Care in Ministry” by Kathy Galleher, PhD
In the demanding rhythm of pastoral life, it is easy for those doing ministry in the church to pour themselves out for others while neglecting their own spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. But self-care is not a luxury — it is a sacred responsibility that enables those doing ministry to remain healthy, faithful, and effective across the decades. This talk will explore practical ways to care for yourself amidst the demands of ministry, including how to make space for rest, interpersonal support, and renewal so you can continue to live out your call with integrity and joy.

Kathy Galleher, Ph.D is a licensed psychologist who specializes in working with men and women in religious life. She received a doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from Colorado State University in 1993. For the past 30 years she has worked as a university professor, psychotherapist, and workshop presenter. From 1998-2006 she was a staff psychologist at the St. Luke Institute. In 2006 she founded “KMG Consultation” to focus on promoting healthy ministry through workshops, therapy, and formation programs. Since 2005 she has been the director of the Healthy Sexual Integration for Religious Life program for the Washington Area Formation Workshop in Washington DC. She has worked with a variety of communities, seminaries and national leadership groups over the years and presents on topics including self-care, healthy boundaries in ministry, training for formators, sexual integration, trauma, conflict management, transitions and grief.
